ISR RADIO: Rotary Connection - "Burning of the Midnight Lamp"

The Rotary Connection’s version of the Jimi Hendrix’s song: “Burning of the Midnight Lamp”, which many of you may recognize as sampled in Jay-Z’s “Hova Song,”
is led by a very young Minnie Riperton.

They take what is arguably one of Hendrix’s lesser known singles and crank it up to the level of "the majestic."

They pile on lush strings and ethereal vocals, and Minnie’s voice, which is hauntingly striking by itself is especially haunting when overdubbed into this many octaves.

The Rotary Connection were a psychedelic-soul, jazz-fusion outfit who were way ahead of their time. They were headed up by Marshall Chess, the son of Chess Records boss Leonard Chess. They actually found Minne Ripperton right under their noses. She was actually hired to be the receptionist at the Chess office.

I can kind of understand why the band never made it big. There are tons of covers on their albums so it's easy to see why they were thought of as a cover band.

Plus, they are really a band created by an arranger (Stepney) and a producer (Chess).

Thus said, even though the bands original songs are quite good, they never had a hit record. Vastly underrated group.
